Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is one of the oldest division of engineering which implements a range of public and private properties for improving societys physical infrastructure and environment. It integrates scientific principles and experience to plan, design and construct networks of highways, railroads, airports, bridges and dams. Civil engineers are often trained to consider the social effects as well as the physical and environmental factors that constrain the planning, design, construction and operation of their projects.

1. Analyzing survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical and geologic data including site investigations to plan projects.
2. Using a range of computer softwares for developing designs.
3. Directing construction, operations and maintenance activities at project site.
4. Compiling job specifications and supervising trending procedures.
5. Resolving design and development problems.
6. Managing budgets and project resources.
7. Scheduling material and equipment purchases and deliveries.
8. Making sure that project complies with legal requirements.
9. Testing soils and materials to determine the adequacy and strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt or steel.

One can become a civil engineer after pursuing a bachelors degree of Technology or Sciences in Civil engineering or environmental science.
One can also opt for other specializations like Master of Planning in Urban & Regional Planning/Housing/Transport planning, Master in Computer Application, PG Diploma in Cement Technology/Construction/Quality control or M-Tech in Earthquake Engineering/Remote Sensing.

Logical Thinking:
Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Problem-Solving skills:
Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop, evaluate options and implement solutions.

Communication skills:
Good oratory skills are required for civil engineers to direct the processes at the work site and also to document the theories involved in the project.

Organisational skills:
In order to co-ordinate with all teams, designing processes and monitor the functionalities of projects, organizational skills are required.

The starting salary would be approximately in the range of Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 50,000 a month.

The growth in this field is a bit slow. One can start their careers as building planners or designers and proceed to become senior engineers. Along with certifications and experience, they can become project managers and progress to becoming Managing Directors.
