Investment Banker (BFSI)

Investment Banking refers to a division of a bank or financial institution that helps corporations and institutions with capital and advisory services. They act as a bridge between investors and corporations which require capital to develop. Investment banking typically covers two areas - Mergers and Acquisition (M&A) and Underwriting. M&A plays advisory roles for both buyers and sellers of business whereas Underwriting is like raising funds through selling stocks or bonds to investors. Major clients for these Investment bankers are Governments, corporations and Institutions.

1. Supervising a team of clerks
2. Interacting with clients and other bank divisions
3. Rectifying data flows and ensuring accuracy
4. Designing flows to maximise efficiency and bank profitability
5. Monitoring and analysing day to day banking processes and transaction reports
6. Making sure that transactions are cleared and settled effectively

One can become an Investment Banker on successful completion of their graduation, preferably in the commerce stream. It helps if the individual has done their MBA as well.

Analytical and Problem solving skills:
This job has a lot to do with numbers and calculations. One should be able to analyse and calculate margins and percentages by understanding the implications of their calculations.

Concentration:
Should look over their work critically by formatting the mistakes and spotting the smallest inconsistencies.

Communication skills:
Communication skills and team orientation are must for the progression of career as an investment banker.

Long working hours:
Investment banking typically involves long hours of work, since the team structure is quite lean.

The average starting salary for an investment banker is Rs. 30,000 35,000 per month. With 4-5 years of experience depending on the region, one can expect salary up to Rs. 70,000 75,000 per month.

Usually investment bankers will start their careers as analysts. With additional education and qualification, they become associates. After a few years of experience, they become vice-presidents and they advance and become Directors. They can also become a Managing Director, the highest designation in an investment bank.
